It is estimated that cancer is the third leading cause of mortality in the world. It strikes without warning and wreaks much havoc. Thunderclap by Juliane Corn Lee is a memoir of a cancer survivor.

In the opening chapters, Juliane describes her privileged childhood and family structure. Her grandfather, Charles Corn, immigrated from China and became a successful American businessman. Juliane remembers her sheltered childhood at the Pagoda, a 24,000-square-foot home owned by her grandfather. Interesting details of their family life and day-to-day activities were quite eye-opening. In time, Juliane found love in Ali who showered her with gifts and love. Their wedding date was fixed and preparations got underway. Unexpectedly, Juliane fell ill and gradually got worse. I shed tears as I read about her sufferings. Ali's role in her life story was a very touching aspect of this memoir.

This book stands out for its clarity and descriptive narrative. Little details were not left to the reader's imagination. These details gave me insight into the author's personality which made it easier for me to understand her thought processes and to deeply feel her pain.

Earlier, I had little knowledge about leukemia. Therefore, much of the information provided in the book was eye-opening. I had no idea that there is only one method for curing leukemia, therefore, I was shocked that Stephen's condition turned out the way it did.

My most favorite aspect of this book is the honesty and openness with which the author writes. She penned her exact thoughts about Stephen when she saw him vibrant and full of life, not minding the fact that they appeared to be selfish. She frequently shares her thoughts without restriction. I appreciate this because I realize that as humans, we lack perfection and sometimes entertain bad thoughts. The only dislike I have about this book is the fact that there were few instances of activities related to astrology and religion.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was exceptionally well edited. The author's writing skill was top-notch and suspenseful. I couldn't drop the book until I turned the last page. The beautiful pictures also gave visual experience to the narrative. I particularly love the picture showing her mother at the airport. An analysis of her features and personality matched the information in the narrative. Patients of leukemia and others who wish to know more about this disease would find this book fascinating.

Honestly, I wish there was a way this so called cancer could be removed from the surface of the earth. Surviving cancer is such a miracle.

It sounds like the author's writing style is powerful. I like that the theme raises awareness about cancer; unfortunately, it is a harsh reality. Thanks for the exceptional review.

Well done on a great review. I can relate to what you covered in your review as I had a friend who died of leukemia at a young age.

Very interesting book. Cancer is a rare disease and we are blessed if we can survive about this kind of disease. I admired Julian Corn Lee coz she is a brave women.

After the cancer issues of my aunt Maria, I concluded that cancer is a very deadly threat. It sucks one’s finance and eventually one’s life. Thanks for the review

lukemia is a dangerous diseas i didn't know that there was a cure for it, I must read the book to find out what it is, this book reminded me of a walk to remember by nicholas sparks, had the same story line and is also based on the events of nicholas's little sister
