Review of Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat
Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat by R.F. Kristi is a creative children’s book that focuses on Inca the detective cat. Inca, her mom, and some of her friends found themselves on a peaceful vacation in Sri Lanka. Though they were busy enjoying the beautiful beaches, the interesting historical sites, and the mischievous wildlife, Inca was on the lookout for a new mystery to solve. Before long, stories of a missing antique sword reach her ears. After making friends with some locals, she rallies her team to try and find the missing item. Will Inca and her friends be able to solve the mystery before vacation is over?
This story had everything I wanted in a children’s book. It contained engaging, unique characters with personalities that leapt from the page. Lessons concerning friendship, teamwork, and accepting others who are different were intertwined with the story in a way that didn’t feel preachy. There were also cute statements such as, “After all, I still have all my nine lives left. Why not take a chance with just one?” that were entertaining.
Excellent details about Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage were included in a manner that taught the reader about the setting’s past while still being relevant to the story. Similarly, other fun facts about Sri Lanka were included (e.g., UNESCO sites, tea plantations, etc.) that brought the setting to life while informing the reader about the area.
The illustrations throughout the story were cute and really helped to highlight the characters’ personalities. A family tree illustration was included at the beginning of the book, which easily explained who all of the characters were. My favorite illustration was of Inca as a mermaid with Rani the sea turtle sitting nearby.
Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat absolutely deserves a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. It is a delightfully written children’s book that fully entertained me as an adult. There were a handful of errors, but they didn’t detract much from the book. This is book seven in the series, but it can be read as a standalone. I recommend this story to anyone who has children in their life – you won’t be disappointed!
