Another thing I liked to do was set up a playlist of music and then use that music as sort of the "soundtrack" to the story...I have one book no one will ever read based on a Pink Floyd album, lol.
When I was in middle school and high school creative writing came a lot more naturally - now for me mostly all I do is article writing. (It pays the bills better for now!) I still like poetry too but writing fiction just hasn't been a priority for me lately!

So far we have:
*Written about a strange picture [just describing it or writing about what is happening in the picture]
*Taken a few different words to incorporate with different ideas you have flowing through your mind
*Use a starter sentence or topic that states a simple idea [like light and shadows]
*Looking for quotes and writing about the meaning of
Reading a lot can help you with ideas and so can music. Pick your favorite book or song and write along the emotions of that piece... Hope that helps in any way.

This will open up your mind and is a great way to start of before writing anything.
