Review of Demon Freaks
This is a review for Demon Freaks by J.R.R.R. (Jim) Hardison. I am giving the book 4 out of 4. I like this book and even went looking to see if there was a sequel.
The main idea of the story is that a group of four friends who are in a band together get caught between two evil Groups, one being a splinter group of the other group.
The band consists of two twins (Ron & Bing), a drummer (Meat), and a keyboardist (Katlyn). In order to prepare for the SAT, they met at Meat’s cabin for a Jam Session/Study Session for the SATs. They are interrupted and attacked by a member of a splinter group of a demonic group and the Drummer gets possessed and drags the rest of the band into a fight between the two groups that are trying to sacrifice the band so that they can raise a demon.
I liked this book and the premise of that Golfers were a demon worshipping cult, I have a friend who is a golfer and I know that Golf can become an obsession, for example that same friend based the choose of what University to go to was based on the fact that the University had a driving range.
I think the book would make a good Comedy Horror film and it is written in a way that it could be adapted. The Story is really driven by the two Twins but it is written in a third person POV.
There are a few missteps and one of the reasons why I was looking for a sequel, was because the lack of the character development and it felt like an introduction to the world.
The introduction of the third group seemed to be a smart joke, but it felt a little flat for me.
Also there seemed to be some confusion about the Caddies, where a late development meant it did not make sense where a character impersonated a Caddy and the fact that Katlyn was a caddy. A way to improve this would have been, if one of the Golfers had been Katlyn’s dad.
Also, I think that the splinter group should have been a separate group who were in a war with the Golfers, maybe Ramblers, as that would have made more sense in explaining why the creatures under the Club House attacked everyone but the Splinter Group. The warring faction would also solve the issue of why the dagger was trying to get back to the Golfers, even when that did make much sense.
This is looks to be a Young Adult book and is definitely geared to the older age group as there are some violence and some nudity mentioned.
Like I said, I was looking for a sequel, as I thought this book did some good world building and I would have liked to get the character better.
I think this book would be suitable for Horror fans, especially if they like Comedy Horrors, whilst it is a YA book, I would say it is suitable for older teens and older due to violent content and nudity content.
