The Devil pulls the strings by J.W.Zarek is a fictional novel that revolves around the story of a 22 years old man, Boone Daniels, who leaves his town Wentzville, Missouri——a place he has lived all his life, for New York City in a bid to perform a gig for his best friend, Flynn, along with his best friend's band professionally know as 'The village idiots'. This is as a result of an accident that occurred during a joust battle which leaves Flynn stuck in an hospital, hence his inability to perform the gig. On getting to New York City, Boone swings to action to meet the necessary people in preparation for the performance but he incidentally meets a lady, Sapphire Anjou, former assistant to professor Stone and they are both caught in the middle of another mission——one that unfolds dark fanatic secrets of the musical world and during the course of it all, it is revealed that Boone's presence in New York carries a different purpose, he is to help Sapphire in summoning the Devil through Paganini's musical notes as only this act can stop Baba Yaga, Sinti and save New York City.

I loved the way Zarek employed a smooth running narrative technique in the novel. I am amazed at the author's choice of words and the descriptions used in the book. He does not only portray visual images through these descriptions but also auditory images, giving accurate word descriptions to each sound, his use of onomatopoeia is outstanding. I also loved the character of the domovois, the way the author portrays them as guardians to the library gives a sense of peace to the environment as opposed to the wild guardians of the Dragons and Nymphs Headquarter. I loved the end of the book as well as how the author shows certain characters to be who the readers least expect.

I consider this book to be one without any flaw as the plot structure, themes and characterization all fit together and it is a well edited and proofread piece of art.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars as it is a very captivating and interesting novel laced with a creative pattern of merging magical realism with historical mythology in linking the past and present together.

The Devil pulls the strings is a book suitable for anyone who loves fantasy novels that contain scenes of time travel, Slavic mythology and high presence of plot twists. It is however not suitable for anyone who is not comfortable with the presence of gory scenes and violence in a novel.

Wow. So intriguing. If only you could tell me more about the book(but I guess not, I will have to go read it myself). I love this review, so lively. The part that appeals to me most is that of description of Sounds; that's so cool. This review is so packed; I've gotten all curious as to what the book entails as a whole. Readers will without doubts want to read the devel pulls the strings after reading carefully this review.
