Review of The Shade of Highfall
Book review of The Shade of Highfall , The Tale of Shrew
Book title : The Shade of Highfall, The Tale of Shrew
Author : Mark O’Dell
It is about the tale of an orphan girl teenage, who lived in the cruelty of street. The toughness in her ealier life, mend her survival skills, courage, and instinct, which proven to be useful later. Her changing life journey had begun when one day, she found an enchanted dagger. It turn her into a legend, a symbol of slick and dangerous shadow. A threat to everyone hinder her path.
Her determination is a perfect balance of good and evil. She had been destined to be savior of all living being in the realm, when someday a peril came. A dark time when desperation, ambition and greed consumed everyone’s logic sense. The fate of all living being are at cost. Time won’t always be our best friend in many critical occasion, and this one too. Eventhough in a very small odd of success, failure certainly not to be accepted.
Mark O’Dell describe Shrew’s mythical and dark adventure in a very detail events, as if we become her. The Shade of Highfall, The Tale of Shrew, is sure a book to be recommended for everyone who like adventure stories. The story background is a world of warriors, paladins, mages, priests of human, sylvan and fey living together. It’s be like fantasy becoming reality. The realm drawn in the map in this book add points to this book. Mark had the very clear pictures and events, described in this book. And it create the effect of definite reality. What kind of unwanted jobs are in such realms, certainly something i cannot imagine. What secret from the past could possibly unknown by city inhabitants, suggested brilliantly. What kind of magical city or structures could be, depicted well by Mark in an awesome writings. Magical artefacts in the whole story are also positive marks for the book. Last but not least, the words/ terms glossary in end part of the book is very helpful for ones have not familiar with magic fantasie story like this. I think it is also well edited.
However, climax of the whole story lately built. Too many unnecessary sideline story in hundred pages, yet we could still easily predict the story plot, eventhough the facts in the story not explicitely described. The end part of this book, leaving us with so many open questions. Many characters introduced, but few only had big role in the whole story. It left us to guess what next to be. Many words chosen, including holy or unholy names in this book also uncommon, confusing me at early read. The story at some part, are gloom, gory and cruel. Restless evil conspiracy and damages everywhere. I think it is only recommended for adult readers. I will rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because of above considerations.
