My life uncensored by Cristina Caymares is a short nonfiction book. It is a retrospective recollection of the author’s experiences with her immediate family throughout her childhood. She divides the book into four chapters and dedicates them to her mother, father, grandmother, and grandfather. Topics weary from everyday life situations, family trips, assault to grief. It is a painfully honest, raw, and personal trip down a memory lane of a little girl growing up in Miami.

Even though the author writes about some hard-hitting and vulnerable experiences, her composed attitude demands respect. She doesn’t shy away from the introspection of her own life, actions, and feelings. Caymares’ self-assertiveness is astonishingly beautiful and admirable. Her genuine approach to writing is my favorite part of this book. Furthermore, I could understand what she was trying to convey, especially with her talking about the impact her grandmother had on her upbringing.

I don’t think that quantity trumps quality, but I wish this book is a little longer. My main dislike of this book is the way the author constructed it. There is no linear time frame of events that are happening. Many times I had to go back and reread a paragraph because narration had me confused. After mentioning in chapter two that she dedicates it to her grandfather, she points out that chapter one is dedicated to her father.

The writing style reminded me of the stream-of-consciousness novel. The reader is immersed in the author’s random thoughts and memories with no logical guiding factor. Another thing I would like to point out are some awkward sentences that seemed rather overly complicated. “I just think she believes whatever she wants to believe, but she taught me to believe whatever I want her to believe.” That would be an example of it. Nevertheless, the writing style is not something I counted as a negative. It is purely my subjective observation that affected my enjoyment of the book.

I noticed only two errors, and it is safe to say the editing is professionally done. Nevertheless, because there were some things I didn’t like about this book, I can’t give it a perfect score. Therefore, I will rate this book with 3 out of 4 stars. Overall, I think the positives outshine the negatives, and that rating is justified.

The ideal reader for this book would be a memoir and autobiography aficionado. However, I would recommend it to all readers who want to read this genre for the first time. Because of its length, it is a perfect starting point.
