Beyond the Higher Ground by Thomas A. Brigger is a fiction book. Tucker Mason a widower is assigned by the construction company he works for to build a prison in Virginia State after the passing on of his wife. The construction process was programmed to last over a year, a period that led Mason to rent a house instead of living in a boring motel. The house he rents makes him target soon after he shakes on it with the realtor. Someone unknown shoots his tyre and pushes his vehicle off the road with a warning to leave town on two separate incidences.

Mason’s moving into the house on Bright’s mountain is followed by a series of disturbing occurrences. After a neighbor’s constant disapproval of his choice of accommodations, Mason’s curiosity is heightened and he begins investigating the story behind the house. He learns of the death and murder of previous owners and hidden money. It all eventually points to drug trafficking that was bedeviling the town. Mason refuses to be intimidated by death threats until all was solved and peace prevailed.

The story Beyond the Higher Ground is set in modern-day Virginia. It portrays the conflicts that modern-day society is battling with. Drug cartels, meth labs, drug use and abuse including overdose issues, and how it has become a societal epidemic. The issues are brought about in the book with a lot of narratives of historical reference spanning generations and decades. Thomas A. Brigger brings out people’s livelihoods throughout periods like the great depression in small-town America.

In presenting his story, the author makes use of a lot of flashbacks. The author has put it across in a clever manner that prevents the confusion of the reader. One should also expect to encounter a lot of suspense as the story unravels. It makes the book interesting as you witness the story comes together.

Beyond the Higher Ground by Thomas A. Brigger is a smooth read. I barely noticed any typos throughout my read. What I liked most about the book is how the little pieces of information were brought together by the author to bring out a vivid picture. I found it genius and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did not find anything to dislike about the book. I would rate the book 4 out of 4 stars and I would recommend it to good-fiction lovers.
