To be honest, this is my second memoir that I read my entire life, and I like it. Ko-Pok's Morning Calm by Dr. David Maloney is a historical military memoir, following Captain Bill Sullivan in his voluntary assignment to South Korea. He needs some healing after a painful divorce and finds that going to South Korea for a moment can be the solution. The year is 1979, post-Korean War. The tension was still so high between the two countries. Assignment to Korea has always been the last choice and seen as a punishment. We will see Bill's day-to-day work and life as a base pharmacist in the military hospital, the hot political turmoil from South Korean domestic affairs, North Korean political and military action, the perspective and political action from US side, and some military and political stories from the North Korean side. Captain Bill Sullivan choose to do the healing in a hot zone. Can this assignment be real healing for him?

Even though I'm not by any means a military or medical person, I always like a good reading about the military and the medical world, and this is one of the books that I like. The book is very detailed, especially about the Air Force world. We could read about the detailed info of each military aircraft that they have at that time. Because Captain Bill Sullivan is also a pharmacist, we will also read through a detailed explanation about how a pharmacy work in the military hospital. Bill's story seems more of a relaxed story. But if you want some action, the political story can give you some tension and action. The romance and family story are quite slow but sweet, so I like it.

If there is one thing that I don't like about the book is that the ending seems too rushed. This book is quite a long read. It's an easy read for me, but long, full of military detail. But, the details have suddenly gone towards the end of the story. Compacted to be a little summary of what happened. Right when I want to know the details.

I want to give a full rating, since I like the book. But I'm still disappointed with the ending. So, I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I still recommend it. It's a good book.

This book is suitable if you're into military and or medical stories. Even though it's quite detailed in the military and medical things, the author doesn't use too many difficult words, so you can still enjoy it even though you are new to this kind of reading.
