Mixed blessings is a very emotional fiction novel which shines a light on a sensitive topic of prejudice, injustice and racism experienced by multiple races in America, especially the mixed racial people; Kimberly was a daughter of a Mexican man and a Jewish woman, she lived in a small town were she had a hard time identifying herself because, when she considered herself to be a white girl the government census suggested that she was not. Her peers would even make fun of the fact that she was a mixed racial child, especially her Jewish side. However Kimberly eventually met someone who understood her, a black christian boy named Ahmed and they feel in love instantly.

Ahmed was a very dedicated christian to a church called The House of Jeremiah and it’s highly favoured minister, Michael Khublia Khan. The minister was rooted to his black roots cultural history, and even preached about forging a new Babylon where black people will be the new leaders in America. He was very determined to achieve what he preached that, a church of white supremacists called The Christian Covenant Church felt threatened for their race when they found out of his plans. The Christian Covenant Church took it upon themselves to put a stop to the ministers plans, which turned the whole ordeal into a tragic race war.

I like that the book shows how religion can influence racism, and also how racism is not always about black and white. Asians, Latinos and Jewish people experience racism too, and it’s always worse if the racism problem is rooted in the government. These issues are still happening in some countries even though there’s an effort to undo the countless years of oppression and racism on a global scale. For instance in South Africa, the oppression ended 28 years ago but the atmosphere of the racism still exists in some of the cities till this very day. I think it was very brave of J.M. Muse to tackle such a serious topic without filtering the reality that racism is about power and control over others.

I enjoyed reading Mixed Blessings from every perspectives in the book regardless of how sensitive the topic was. There was nothing I dislike about it since the professionalism from the editors was present and outstanding that I found no spelling errors or typos.

This is the best book about racism I’ve ever read, and I rate it a 4 out of 4 . The book talks about a serious matter but it was written in manner that I did not find it offensive or inappropriately discriminating to the other ethnic groups, instead it educated me on how deep racism actually goes. The author and the editorial team really did a good job on this one, which was why I did not rate it a 3 out of 4.

I recommend this book to young adults because it contains content for mature audience. Lovers of thriller, drama, politics and crime based novels will enjoy reading this book.
