Michelle Cummings' debut novel, The Reel Sisters, is a charming tale about a group of friends who share Rose's love of fly fishing and spending time at her cabin in the woods. Fishing is not a special interest of mine, although, like Sophie in the novel, I have seen "A River Runs Through It" and appreciated the serene beauty depicted in the movie. I, however, was not inspired to pick up a rod and stand in a river all day. Sophie was willing to leave her comfort zone to follow that inspiration. Ms. Cummings conveys the mood and atmosphere of the riverside scene beautifully. I loved learning a little bit about the artistry of fly fishing as I got to know the characters Ms. Cummings has brought to life.

Rose, Amanda, Veronica, Sophie, and Melody are all very different women, at different stages in their lives, united in their passion for fishing. Each of the characters tells her own story, in her own voice. This means the chapters switch between characters. I enjoyed the changes in perspective, but, occasionally, I felt this disrupted the flow of the story and left me wondering if I had lost my place in the narrative. The characters all have wildly different story arcs, overlapping in the river, where they come together to fly fish, which is the thread that weaves this novel together.

We only share a small segment of life with the women, and although the book is long, I was left wanting more. Ms. Cummings is focused on personal development in her working life, and that is evident in the novel. Once or twice, I felt the book tried too hard to teach a life lesson, and some of the plot points felt too harsh to me, but perhaps that is just because I adore a thoroughly happy ending.

On the whole, this is an exceptionally well-written book that has been professionally edited and reads beautifully. I noticed no grammar errors and no spelling errors at all. The page breaks and chapter headers are utterly charming and add to the reading experience. I have no hesitation in rating this book 4 stars out of 4 stars. I found myself thinking about Rose, Veronica, Sophie, Melody, and Amanda after I had finished the book, always a sign of a captivating read.

I feel this book would have a wide appeal but does contain possible triggers around drowning and military service.
