Review of The Freedom Building
The Freedom Building by Martin Kendall is a crime thriller about a 48-year-old architect named John Gowan, who is estranged from his wife and daughter. He co-owns his firm, Gowan Partnerships, with Pete Williams, and they are well known in their community, but they have never created anything significant. John dreams of rebuilding the Zenith building after it is bombed. After going out to measure the site shortly after the bombing, John is in a car accident where he hits his head on the steering wheel. He gains consciousness in the hospital only to discover he has missed the last three and a half years of his life. He learns that he has designed the new Zenith building and is well known around the world. The only problem is that he has amnesia and cannot remember anything. Every time he tries to look at the blueprints of the building’s design or when someone tries to talk to him about it, he gets dizzy, words become garbled, everything goes dark, and he feels like he is being pulled into a dark hole. What is going on? What will he remember when his memory comes back?
Martin Kendall did a fantastic job developing the characters. I could sense the love, jealousy, competitiveness, and fear each of the characters went through. I could see the tramp on the bench, and I could sense John’s frustration and confusion dealing with his memory loss. The descriptions of the demographics allowed me to see the debris at the bombing site and the trees blowing in the wind. Each character had a different opinion of what freedom meant to them, and I understood them. The many different definitions of freedom and what it can mean to someone made me stop and reflect on it. Freedom is a complex concept.
I disliked nothing about this book. I found it a fast read because the book has only a couple of errors that did not deflect from my reading enjoyment. Some of the pages were repetitive, but they only enforced the point Martin Kendall was trying to make.
This well-written book has a fast-paced plot and has been edited by a professional editor. This enjoyable book deserves nothing less than 4 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed reading this book, and the ending gives me hope that a sequel may be forthcoming.
I recommend this thought-provoking book to older teenagers and adult readers who enjoy crime thrillers, mystery, suspense, and romance. This book has it all. The non-borderline profanity is not suitable for younger or sensitive readers. The sexual content is non-descriptive.

Bertha Jackson's review is so detailed that you might not need to read the entire book to know what it is about.
For me, John Gowan's life in an unknown world for three and a half years is the most fascinating of the entire plot...
