Charlie Sheldon’s Strong Heart Book 1 focuses on the journey of Sarah’s introduction into the lives of a side of her family that she had never known. Her impromptu appearance one raining day caught Tom, her grandfather; William, Tom’s friend and Myra, William’s daughter by surprise. There are many themes in this story which include but are not limited to: displacement, empowerment, will to survive, family, coming of age, death, and trust. Sarah starts out as the character you aren’t sure what to think about or how to react to as her story is a complex one. As each chapter passes, you find her growing on you as she interacts with the other characters and you see the impact that they have on one another. Her role throughout the book brings the story together seamlessly in a way that only reading it for yourself can truly bring across.

There is a quote in Chapter 2 of the book where Myra says, “This is Olympic Peninsula. This is a land of magic, history and legend. A place of myth, ancient stories, ancient people.” This quote is the promise of the author to bring you on an adventure and Charlie Sheldon delivered on that promise throughout the book. This is the aspect of the book that I appreciated the most. The development and growth of each character is so vivid that it is impossible to ignore making this book an easy read that ends before the reader is ready to let go.

Being asked for the negative aspects of this book, in my opinion, is a tall order. It’s structured in a way that makes it hard to put down. As long as you pay attention to the flow of the story, you will be transported onto the mountains that were the backdrop for many scenes in the book.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. There were no errors that I could find. It was a great story told very well and one that I would not mind adding to my list of books that I would read again. The flow of the story was impeccable and the descriptions of the people and places were vivid and profound.

In terms of recommendation, I believe the audience can range from teens to adults with both groups standing to gain from the experience in different ways. For both, it would be an exploration of aspects of history and human nature often overlooked. It is recommended for those looking for a story that will bring you along with the characters on the adventure promised.
