Review of Afterburn
Afterburn by R.K. Higgins is the first book in a series. It is a story that depicts courage and teamwork.
Reme Reagan was a farm boy who had always dreamed of riding in the racing city of Andora. His dream came true when he met Vick Dozz, who appeared with a flying pod. His father would not let him become a rider due to certain issues between him and his wife, Reme's mother. Eventually, he succumbed and allowed his son to go to Andora to achieve his dream. During the trip, he met Cindy, a girl from Ternion-Prime. Cindy had a sister who was also a rider, and when Reme saw Cindy's sister, Kalina, he immediately fell for her. Two people control the racing world in Andora: David Yuben of Mantis Magnetics and Eleanor Cinder of Singularity Systems. They happened to be the most powerful men in the racing world. During a race that involved Reme, Kalina, and David, David's pod exploded, and he died on the scene. Some people thought it was an accident; some thought it was the handiwork of cyborgs. If you would like to know who was responsible for the act, you should pick up this book.
Afterburn by R.K. Higgins is a science-fiction novel that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. It is a fast-paced novel, and it has great character developments. The suspense was spot on, and the plot twist was never what you would expect. It was almost impossible to see it coming. It was written in the first-person narrative.
One thing I loved about this work was how the author used Reme's situation with his parents to portray how parents can help their kids achieve their goals even if things are not going according to their plan. Reme's parents wanted him to continue their legacy by taking over the farm, but Reme had a different idea. It was frustrating at first, but they had to support their only son. Parents should emulate this. They should know that their kid's happiness is the utmost priority.
Also, this is a work that reveals the ugly side of technology and innovation. Although technology aids developments and makes life easier, we should not forget the downsides. The readers can observe this in effect in the case of Eleanor's Singularity Systems' treatment of her riders, despite working for her.
Frankly, this is a good book. I was fascinated by the author's writing style too. There was nothing I disliked about this book. I only found two errors. It shows the book was professionally edited. Therefore, I will give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I would also recommend this book to lovers of science fiction.
