Are there any famous people from the place where you live?

Post by lady_charlie »

Hello!

I was going to ask about authors or musicians and then I thought, well, why not actors or other famous people?

I am from a very small town in a state that is famous for, well, corn. And that is fading as fast as the farm ground.

But we also are the home of Gene Stratton Porter, James Whitcomb Riley, Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, John Cougar Mellencamp, Paul Dresser and Theodore Dreiser, not to mention Michael Jackson and James Dean, David Letterman, Shelley Long, Bill Blass and Kurt Vonnegut.

Abraham Lincoln lived here as a boy.

Lady Charlie, what is the actual name of your State?

Some famous writers and journalists born in Queensland but I doubt if many people outside Australia know them:

Thea Astley
Nick Earls - I've met him and he's a nice man
Hugh Lunn - I've met him and he's also a nice man
David Malouf
George Negus
Kath Walker
Judith Wright
Benjamin Law

There's others like musician Keith Urban (married to actress Nicole Kidman) but the one I remember the most because his plane is displayed at the airport, is pioneer aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith who made the first flight across the Pacific in his aircraft "Southern Cross" from San Francisco, California USA, to Brisbane, Queensland Australia, in 1928. Scary stuff back then!

Wow. That is really awesome. :D
This should be a competition with a prize, like a trip to England or some mothballs.

I thought James Dean would win, but who is going to top Shakespeare?

Well you are right, I don't know those, but you probably never heard of most of mine either.
And I am just discovering Australian Lit, isn't the Book Thief Markus Zusak from Australia?

There are a few from my birthplace, Nottingham in the UK. D. H. Lawrence is one of the most notable ones, and I am actually related to him (through marriage, not by blood unfortunately!)

I currently live in Salisbury in the UK, where Paul Di'Anno lives (ex lead singer of Iron Maiden). He wasn't born here, but lives here now and has been into my workplace a few times. I didn't know who he was until somebody told me, as I can't say I'm an Iron Maiden fan!
