Review of The Ping-Pong Champion of Chinatown
The Ping-Pong Champion of Chinatown is a compelling, humorous book by James Hanna. Gertie McDowell, a twenty-three-year-old who lives in south Texas, has a journal she kept since she was eighteen, where she lived in turkey roost, Kentucky. She needs help turning her journal into a book and that's where she remembers James Hanna, a guy she'd met in Cherokee Sals while riding a mechanical bull. Her journal goes from becoming a YouTube star for some creepy feet fetish to being duped to work in a dress company named 'sugar shack' to getting herself imprisoned to getting under a witness protection program to becoming a ping pong champion in China. They consist of eight interrelated storylines that are sure to keep you laughing, enthralled and engaged.
Gertie is a gullible and naive girl who keeps getting misled. She's a character that just can't help getting in trouble in her wild misadventures. I just couldn't get enough of the 'Gertie-ism' in Gertie. It was a humorous read and had me throwing fits of laughter. Reading it, I just felt like 'Dern is this girl just outright dumb'. Some similes like "Well, I just have as much talent as Wendy has burgers" and clauses like 'I was dumber than broccoli' had me cracking up.
The book was professionally edited, well written with no single error, courtesy to James Hanna, the author as well as the editor of Gertie's journal. I want to assume that even if there was a spelling or grammatical error, it won't be counted because it was 'Gertie's journal' and so, she had already warned the readers there would be but fairly speaking, there were none. The reviews on the first page of the book were what piqued my interest and the preface was what got me excited.
I enjoyed reading the ping pong champion in china town and so, I found no negative aspect while reading the book. It was an easy, cheerful, and light-hearted read.
I am proud to say The Ping-Pong Champion of Chinatown by James Hanna deserved my 4 out of 4 stars, if not more. It was an engrossing, absorbing, well-executed read which kept me glued to the end.
If you're in for a good, hearty, laughable read, do pick up this book. If you get easily offended by someone questioning the Bible in a ridiculous, nutty way, please give the book a skip. Moreover, there is no sexual content but it contains only mild obscenity such as 'Dern' and 'Shucks'.
