Review of Demon Freaks
The night before their SAT’s, twins Bing and Ron Slaughter go to a friend’s house on the pretense of studying. The group of boys are met by a series of bizarre and nerve wrecking events that would be the catalyst for the night that would forever change their lives. In a blink of an eye the group of friends are thrown into a whirlwind of the supernatural. With two of the twins’ friends kidnapped, Bing and Ron are faced with challenges such as fighting evil golfers, monsters, and their history teacher. Can these boys save their friends from being sacrificed to a demon and still make it in time for their test in the morning?
Demon Freaks is a fast-paced comedic horror that delivers non-stop action. With a constant air of suspense coupled with beautifully descriptive writing, this book draws you into the story alongside the characters. The author, J.R.R.R. Hardison, does an excellent job at incorporating just the right amount of comedy throughout the book whilst keeping to the horror theme. Throughout the book the author gives the individual characters a well written and unique development making them more realistic, relatable, and likeable.
There was little to dislike about this book, although it could be criticized for its short and fast-paced storyline, I feel as though the rhythm of the events created a unique take on the suspenseful aspect of the book.
I rate this book 4 stars out of 4 stars; the author created an excellent combination of comedy and horror. This mix of genres made for a suspenseful and thrilling plot while keeping it light through the addition of humor. This is a book I would go back to again simply for its fun and captivating adventure. The authors use of similes and references made the book even more engrossing, giving a truly immersive experience. I cannot think of any other rating to give this novel, the writing style, characters, and all-around plot is worth every star.
I recommend this book to any lover of light horror coupled with comedy, as well as anyone looking for a quick, fun and easy read. It should be taken into consideration that some of the themes may not be appropriate for a preteen audience. This book would be more suited to young adults and teens; however, it could also be enjoyed by an older audience with a sense of humor and whimsy.
