This one! We tend to gravitate to the most obvious one, but looking closely at other characters, Victoria really showed us lots of things that we can actually look up to.Mstrtim wrote: ↑12 Feb 2022, 10:22 Trying to pick a favorite character, from a book that is rich with incredible characters, is very difficult. If I had a carry-over favorite from the first two books, it would be William, probably because he is closer in age to me than many of the others. But specific to this book, I would say that my favorite character is Victoria. I was taught from an early age to watch out for the true protagonist in a book, with the qualification being that the protagonist is the one who is changed the most within the confines of the story. For me, this would be Victoria, a professional woman in a sea of men, and, essentially, a single mother. She digs deeply into herself and second-guesses her values and goals, eventually throwing caution to the wind and standing up for that in which she most believes, the truth and her personal integrity.

It takes a lot of courage to carry on what she did.

Jared is in some ways parallel to this kid I went on a camping trip with way back in 1965 when I was 18 and he was 16. I and an adult were leading this trip into New Hampshire's White Mountains with about eight 16 year olds, four days and nights. The kid whose first name was Bruce was overweight, soft, and had weak ankles, and right away he started falling behind, slower, struggling, and the other kids were pretty hard on him the first two days. Then the third day we ended up caught in a bad storm, up high, and in the end we hiked 28 miles over 4 4000 foot peaks and crossing a flooding river, all the way back to the car at ten pm, rain all the way, the furthest I have ever walked in one day, and this day the kids figured out they could only go as fast as Bruce, and they started encouraging him, and helping him, and in the end he made it, we all made it. Even though I was hardly any older, I was stunned watching the transformation of these bullies into helpers and how Bruce responded. I had been pretty sure he could never make it, that he would break down, it sure looked like that, but he kept on, in pain, ankles wrenched, refusing to give over any of his pack weight to others, just plodding along, grim, but he made it. It was a triumph for him to finish that day, walk that far without breaking down, it was hard for all of us (the adult had been a member of a world champion eight oared crew in 1963 and he was 6-4 and tough as a hickory nut) and yet all of us, and Bruce, prevailed. That always stayed with me, how Bruce somehow found his core and power, and I'd like to thinkl that what Jared ended up doing was the same.....Beatrice Mwangi 5 wrote: ↑23 Feb 2022, 07:06 My favorite character is Jared. This is because it is easy to see Sarah's character of bravery, resilience, and responsibility. However, Jared in subtle ways was able to overcome prejudices from others. He became what his father and the soldiers in the mining thought he was not capable of being.

However, I think I found Travis' character quite fascinating. He seemed to know a lot and knows how to dig up information.

It makes a whole lot of sense. But frankly, it hard to choose a favorite from the array of characters that blessed this book.Charlie Sheldon wrote: ↑23 Feb 2022, 11:29Jared is in some ways parallel to this kid I went on a camping trip with way back in 1965 when I was 18 and he was 16.
