The Music Maker's Daughter by Gayle Wyatt is a historical fiction set in 1930s England that tells the story of 12-year-old Madeline 'Maddy' Brooks. Maddy loves to play the piano just like her father, and she has big dreams of becoming a concert pianist to fulfil the dream her father was unable to achieve. However, life has another set of plans for Maddy, and a series of events force her into adulthood before she is even remotely ready for it. Her world comes to a halt when her father dies tragically in an accident, and with her mother in quarantine dying from tuberculosis, Maddy suddenly finds herself alone in the world with no family but her eight-year-old brother, Matthew.

Maddy and her brother get sorted into separate orphanages. A year passes, and it seems life is giving Maddy another opportunity to realise her dreams when the wealthy but childless couple, the Belaughs, take an interest in Maddy and decide to sponsor her music education. However, Maddy soon discovers that not all that glitters is gold, and she learns just how cruel the world can be, especially to young girls during that time. As life continues to happen to Maddy, she will have to fight to keep her music alive and honour the vow she made to her father.

This was a beautifully written story. I loved how the author captured the essence of the 1930s, especially in the dialogue. The story starts slowly and then quietly weaves you into its world. The writing was so well done that it felt like I was transported into the book, seeing the story as it unfolded. It captures your attention and emotions from the beginning and does not let go until the end. I found it very difficult to drop this book while reading. It will tug at your heartstrings.

There were no negative aspects to this book. I have not read a book that has touched me like this in a while. I ached for Maddy and everything she went through. The author indicated that there would be a sequel to this book, and I cannot wait to read it. There were a few typographical errors, but they were not enough to remove a star. As a result, I’m pleased to give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.

Fans of V.C. Andrews will absolutely love this book. However, it contains scenes of physical and sexual abuse that may not be suitable for some readers.
