The Crystilleries of Echoland by Dew Pellucid starts with the mysterious disappearance of thousands of children. Only one child ever returned, Will Cleary. Will returned with a falcon and a wolf that do not leave his side and watch over him, but his twin sister remained missing. All Will's parents have done since he came back is attempt to find his sister, barely acknowledging his existence and not give him the affection and attention he needs. When his strange, but faithful, pets reveal a shocking secret that they are not what they seem, Will is transported into another world, the hidden world of Echoes, Echoland. Echoes are the ghosts of sounds, with us being what are known as the sounds. Will is pulled into a mission to help his echo, Prince William, claim his rightful place as King of Echoland. What ensues next is a fast paced wild fantasy adventure consisting of running from death and trying to find the truth behind the King's death and clear his name of the rumors surrounding it while clearing the royal family's good name. Will works with his newfound friends, and his Echo, to bring the truth to light and find a hidden world beyond the Frozen Lake that will set the echoes of Echoland free.
Dew Pellucid did a wonderful job of blending fantasy and mystery to create a captivating coming of age tale. The story was full of twists and turns to keep you interested in the book and guessing at the truth of Echoland.
While this is a great story, there are some things that kept the story of being perfect. The beginning of the story seemed to drag on longer than necessary before the transition to Echoland. There were also parts where the transitions were choppy and rushed. The villains of the book sometimes seemed to just appear instead of being built into the story.
While listening to the audiobook version, I followed along on the Kindle edition and did not find any errors and would consider the book to be exceptionally written and edited. Based on the books content and storyline, I would recommend this book to middle school aged children and older. I believe that even adults can enjoy the story of Echoland, but is geared towards middle school age. I would rate this story a solid 4 out of 4 stars based on lack of errors found and the interesting story that Pellucid has created.
