Enemies to Lovers OR Friends to Lovers

Post by Kajol Dadhania »

Let the debate begin...
Imagine if we had no secrets, no respite from the truth. What if everything was laid bare the moment, we introduced ourselves?

Every romance or young adult film has one or the other of them as its starting place. But if I had to choose, I would go from friends to lovers. In my experience, it's much more frequent for people to be enemies than friends of lovers, and I'm sure that's the case for other people as well.

Enemies to lovers all the way. It is so fun watching two people who hate each other slowly fall in love. Because they start to be vulnerable with one and another and it is so CUTE to read.

Enemies to lovers is more realistic and has many twists and turns to enjoy. The fights, denial then confession is a journey worth joining rather than friends to lovers which is predictable.

I prefer enemies to lovers. It shows a very different character development as well as personal development for said characters. A bit more around overcoming differences and so forth.

Both have their merit. In all honesty, though, if they went from friends to lovers, they were always attracted to each other. They just didn't recognise it or, if they did, they didn't act on it in order not to jeopardise the friendship.

Friends to lovers is actually such a cliche to me because it is usually expected but the more exciting and thrilling option is enemies to lovers.

I adore the enemies-to-lovers trope; it would have to be near the top of my list when it comes to tropes. You can just feel the tension between the characters, and when they finally get together it's electric.

Friends to lovers is wonderful, but I would still say my preference is enemies to lovers. Love and hate are two sides of a coin after all... Leads to more drama and passion!

K-Dramas and highschool flicks love to sell us that enemies-to-lovers thing but it doesn't fly in real life. Makes for good fantasy though, and drama. Drama is always good in storytelling.
