Review of LOOP
A recently released computer game called Loop has been spreading like wildfire. Unfortunately, something terrible is happening to some of the frequent players of the game. After catching on fire, they turn into Loopers, monsters with superhuman strengths and capabilities. Their sole goal seems to be to slaughter people, either by themselves or by hunting in packs. For some reason, the little college town of Mazeville seems to be hit harder than most other areas.
One of the biggest problems for the public is they believe the violent videos in the news and on social media are all a hoax. This belief is being reinforced by members of the government, who are trying to hide the plague and their involvement in the creation of the program. The public doesn’t realize that the Loopers are being caused by the game. Three unexpected ragtag heroes must face formidable odds to try to save the people of Mazeville—a one-legged man known as Bad Ass, a small but fierce retro-gaming expert, and an agent from the Interpol Cyber Crimes Division.
LOOP by William Kely McClung is a 317-page novel listed in the C/T/M/H genre that unquestionably has a lot of horror and suspenseful qualities. However, it could have been listed in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre as well, being based on accelerating advances in artificial intelligence and modified humans with supernormal abilities. Although the first in a series, it can be read as a standalone novel as most of the pertinent questions are answered by the end of the story. The book vividly showcases the author's excellent imagination. Jumping from one thrilling scene to the next, the book definitely doesn’t lack in action. It begins in the prologue, where the reader is transported to a village in Africa that appears to have been bombed. Next, in Chapter One, we are immersed in the terror of a group of people trying to escape pursuing Loopers. The author’s mesmerizing and hair-raising writing quickly transports readers into Mazeville’s story and will compel them to jump at every little sound.
As much as I enjoyed the story, a couple of things could be improved. To begin with, several errors were encountered. These could be easily corrected with another round of editing. Also, I felt like there were too many sentence fragments. I don’t mind some sentence fragments, and they can provide the story with a sense of urgency, which they did here. However, one has to make sure the story is still easy to follow, and in this case, it is not always. An example is from page 63, “Cautioning him for quiet. The wide-eyed little girl with the doll in hand squatting beside them. Over their shoulders on soldiers shooting up the dirt.”
Because of the previous reasons, LOOP achieves a rating of three out of four stars. It is way too suspenseful and imaginative for two stars. I recommend it to readers who enjoy apocalyptic novels with lots of action. Viewers of the TV series The Walking Dead would most likely love it. Lots of violence, profanity, and occasional sex are encountered in the book; therefore, it is only appropriate for adults. If any of those things pose a problem for the reader, then they might want to consider looking elsewhere.

Thank you so much for the kind words. You have made my day!thuriya albayaa wrote: ↑19 Mar 2022, 05:22 I always appreciate your reviews and find them thrilling, and this one is not an exception. I am sure to enjoy such a book full of suspenseful and sci-fi aspects. The group of protagonists seems wild and lovable, and that otherwise would not have teamed up together. I thoroughly enjoyed your phrasing, and thank you for the excellent review. Well done!

It is scary how much people enjoy games; they can be quite addictive. I'm curious to see where the next book takes us. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!Kehinde_211 wrote: ↑19 Mar 2022, 17:07 The dimension this book takes is quite different and unique. Because people love playing games, there will be lots of sequences to look forward to in this book. I'm intrigued already.

That would be a good guess, but the game itself doesn't appear to have any violence in it. You will have to read it to understand. Thanks for taking the time to read the review and sharing your thoughts!Hyacinth Bella wrote: ↑20 Mar 2022, 09:33 This sounds like a metaphor about the violence that is portrayed in Online Games, and how it could affect people's take and actions regarding violence, especially little kids who play Online Games.
Thanks for the spectacular review, this seems to be an intriguing book!
