Review of The Boy Who Befriended a Giant
Shaun Williams has composed a compelling book about two kids who appeared as outcasts to everyone else at school. At eight years old, Jack is shorter than the rest of his age mates. In addition, he has some weird-looking hair and has freckles around his cheeks and nose. With such a combination, no child wants to associate with him. Even at lunch and recess, he sits alone.
One day, a boy named Preston joins his school. Contrary to Jack, he is taller and huger than every other kid. Plus, he is dark-skinned. The rest of the kids regard him as a giant! Despite being good at sports, Preston has to keep to himself. The others run away when he approaches them. Shyly, Jack approaches Preston one day. Will they turn out to be friends?
I enjoyed the contrast between Jack and Preston. While one is white, shy, and small-structured, the other is from a different race and huge. Jack had been lonely for so long that he saw it as normalcy. Even when his home’s doorbell rang, he knew that was not his call. Instead, Jack’s elder brothers run to open the door, knowing it was friends asking to play together.
Typical to many book formats, this PDF has vibrant pictures that will stun children. I appreciated that. There’s a lesson about judging others that kids will learn. Jack’s dad is portrayed as an intelligent and caring man, often sharing advice with his sons. Jack’s mum is a well-rounded person. She ensures the family is properly cared for, attends PTA meetings, volunteers here and there, among others.
I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. The above-written points justify the rating. Furthermore, there was not even a single thing I did not like. There were no errors; therefore, the book is professionally edited. I recommend The Boy Who Befriended a Giant by Shaun Williams to kids who feel different from others. There’s always a spot for you.
