Review of Silent
What would make an erstwhile enthusiastic, vibrant, and energetic 15-year-old suddenly sober, scared, and withdrawn? In the case of Brenda Corelis, it was a combination of different factors. Brenda, after discovering later in life that she has repressed and unidentified trauma, goes on to write a book about her life, especially centering on the story of her childhood, which is characterized by sexual harassment, assault, family neglect, loneliness, unworthiness, and lack of love. Even after the culprit is arrested and brought to book, Brenda still doesn't recover. What could be the cause of this?
Silent is a psychological short story that brings into light all the effects of sexual abuse and unresolved psychological issues. It shows how these things go on to affect a person's relationships later in life. Brenda Corelis tells her story in a spellbinding manner. Using the first-person narrative, she gives us an insight into her life events and what they cost her and those around her. She also shows us clearly what youthful exuberance is like and how it can be curtailed.
I love this book so much because it brings out the pertinent issues surrounding people in society today, thereby making it relatable to readers. It also shows the need for parents and guardians to be sensitive to the happenings in the lives of their children and wards. I love the author's way of describing each character in the book and linking their actions to her personal life. The author also preaches the necessity of facing and confronting our innate fears and traumas before they weigh us down. The effects a parent's attitude and lifestyle can have on a child are also clearly seen in this book.
There is absolutely nothing to hate about this book, as it has a lot of lessons that everyone can learn from. It is also professionally edited, as I noticed no errors while reading it. For these reasons, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Silent contains only one vulgar word and is recommended for parents and guardians. People who have encountered one form of abuse or another also have a lot to learn from this book.
Silent is a masterpiece! Not only because it is a true account of the life of the author, told amazingly, but there is also always something everybody can pick up and learn from. It is sure to keep you engaged. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did, or even more.
