Review of Infinity 7
Infinity 7 by Charles R. Hinckley is a science fiction novel that follows Astronaut Dr. John Collins as he fights for his life as the space station he is on is headed straight for a collision course with Earth. Aliens seem to be taking over the crew, driving them mad, but are the aliens attacking, or is it all just a big misunderstanding. John has to work fast in order to survive.
Infinity 7 is a fast-paced, thrilling science fiction. Readers will be drawn in by the mystery as John works through the problems faced, both personal and not. The book is short but well fleshed out, with a fantastic ending that ties everything together. The narrator is somewhat unreliable, causing you to second guess everything and making the tale a puzzle to work out. There is a horror element splashed in, keeping readers on edge. Along with the main plotline of aliens and surviving aboard the space station, John is also dealing with the death of his wife and being there for his daughter. Readers who have lost someone close to them may be able to connect to the main character and put themselves in his place.
While the plot is terrific, it is a bit cliché. There are many stories about astronauts discovering aliens in space and struggling to survive. However, that is where the cliché ends, and Infinity 7 proves its uniqueness further on in the book. The one problem I had was the unreliable narration and jumping around. While adding mystery to the plot, it did make reading slightly tricky.
I give Infinity 7 by Charles R. Hinckley 3 out of 4 stars. I removed one star for the cliché plot at the beginning and the jumpy narration. Overall, this is an excellent book. There were no errors I could find, showing that the book was professionally edited.
I would recommend this novel to adults that love science fiction, space, aliens, and high-stake thrillers. Older teens and young adults will especially love the fast-paced story. I would not recommend this story to young readers and people who dislike blood and horror. Infinity 7 does contain blood, graphic descriptions of burning to death, alien horror, and mentions of illicit drugs. The work does touch on facing the loss of a loved one. I suggest parents read this first before deciding if their teens should be allowed to read this book.
