I agreed with you that the death of Eric could be an emphasis by the author to show that betrayal is not good. Apart from the betrayal as a theme, other themes I found are love, friendship, determination for survival and family bond.

The most emotional moment is when the princess finally got her vengeance.

The theme of betrayal can't be overemphasized. I also saw themes of sacrifice, war, hatred, slavery and enmity. There was also protection and loyalty.

Surely slavery comes top on the list of themes in this book. There's also the theme of family, which was shown from the first scene.

The predominant theme is betrayal as portrayed by Eric's shocking death. The other themes are adventure, family, slavery, love, revenge, war, hatred, friendship and shocking enough sacrifice, the overwhelming love a mother has for a child whether they get along or not was portrayed beautifully here. :D

The theme of loyalty stands out in this book as Scarlett Mistress bounds her crew to her command. They have to pretend to be loyal to Lomoche.

The theme of betrayal is brought out clearly by the author. This is done through the death of Eric. Apart from that we can also see the theme of loyalty between Brandy and her mother. Other themes also featured in the book are romance, corruption, slavery, redemption, duty, passion and trust.

Betrayal was probably the biggest theme that stood out to me, but also perseverance and strength in several different senses.

I really liked the themes of self-sacrifice and good vs. evil found throughout the book. I also enjoyed that Brandy needed to overcome her anger and open herself up to love in order to achieve her purpose.
