I'm not a fan of historical fiction but the book sounds pretty well researched and the combination of real facts with imaginary events is amazing. Besides the things described in the book like racism, displacement, and the plight of the disadvantaged are unfortunately important even nowadays. Congratulations on becoming BOTD!

I am looking forward to reading this book. The idea of a mature female character as a main character and not just “set dressing” is intriguing. I am also interested in Elizabeths experience in passing. This was an excellent review and has whet my appetite to finish the book.

A historical fiction based on a true event published in a newspaper article about one of Louisiana's last duels in the 1800s. I like how the main characters are female and aged characters still play a major role in the story. I'd like to find out if Elizabeth's relationship with her racist fiancé weathered the storm. Great review!

I think Elizabeth is playing a dangerous game by hiding the truth from her racist fiance. Margaret is an interesting character, and I would love to know more about her. Thanks for your review.

I think I'd enjoy the most reading about how to uproot your life and restart where no-one knows you, starting afresh. I enjoyed reading your review. Well done.

Curious about the relationship between Elizabeth and her fiancé. I want to know how they met and if she fears leaving him or something because he might learn the truth. Margaret is an interesting character and I wonder how her story connects with Elizabeth and how this culminated into a duel.

This book brings the event of one of Louisiana's last duels to construct a unique narrative with well developed characters. Margaret and Elizabeth seem to be two of them. The fact that this book brings the theme of house construction caught my attention too. Thanks for the review!

From its title, the book suggests that it is about fresh starts. The lives of two women;Elizabeth and Margaret, begin afresh when they relocate to Acadi. I will read the book to see how the author intertwined the lives of the two women. The merging of a true event with the author's own interpretation and creativity makes for a compelling read. Great review.

I have to agree with the reviewer's point regarding aged characters reduced to a caricature, most often not even kind satire, but downright ridicule. It's like people willfully forget that we all inevitably approach that stage with each day passed. A bit of respect to those who once was young wouldn't be amiss, in my opinion, so thanks for the treat.
