Review of Tyler's Baby Sister
Author M. C. Abushar presents the second book in the Tyler, the Rabbit series, Tyler's Baby Sister, which, through the main character that I have come to greatly connect with, takes us through a difficult phase of life that a lot of us have experienced.
How do children feel when their mothers give birth and they see that most of the attention is given to the new baby? How do they handle this unforeseen change? In this book, Tyler experiences the same situation since the story kicks off with how he anticipates his mother's return from the hospital with his baby sister, who he has prayed to have for so long. He misses his mother's company as well and thinks back to all the things she helps him out with. Nevertheless, on his mother's return with his baby sister, Tia, things are not the same. This makes Tyler very sad since he knows that he has lost his mother's attention. How can he solve this problem?
I will proceed by awarding this book the maximum rating of four out of four stars and must applaud the author for following the previous book with an even better offering here. It was heartwarming to see that amidst the trial that Tyler endured in this story, he held on to the positive values that he displayed in the previous book, including thoughtfulness and kindness. It is very easy for children to give in to their emotions and act in a negative way in these kinds of situations, but Tyler has set the best of examples here by bringing some of the main roles of an older sibling to the forefront: protecting and helping the younger ones. The author expertly incorporates this lesson into the story, and I am sure children will easily adopt it.
Another key lesson in the book is the significance of being selfless, and the author duly shows how this attitude can help us to not only feel good about ourselves but also connect positively with others. I would say that it was professionally edited.
Finally, M. C. Abushar's signature watercolor images are also present in this book and help to narrate the story brilliantly and maintain children's attention while they read through this enlightening book. Children between the ages of three and ten will thoroughly enjoy and learn from this book.
