It's sad that "in recent times in America" kids still have to face racism. But it makes sense that a young adult book broaches subjects that are realistic and relatable. And I enjoy few things more than getting to know a character, car for them, and seeing them grow along with the plot.
Thank you!/

Wow! It sounds like you really enjoyed the book. Between the captivating writing and the well-developed characters, I’ll have to add this to my reading list.

Star seems a sensitive and thoughtful character that internalizes the things she sees and hears. These events come to life in her vivid dreams, which are sometimes magical and at others a grim reminder of the change in the lives of herself and her brother, Thatcher. It seems like an interesting historical fiction novel. Thanks for a good review on this book.

Even if this book tackles heavy topics such as racism, growing up, and the harshness of reality, I think it would be a fresh read as we connect to the characters' struggles. I know not everyone has the exact same experiences, but experiences are more similar than you thought it could be, and these differently similar experiences would make us connect to these characters that could give us comfort and the assurance that we are not alone when it comes to fighting our dragons.

I would love to read this book someday, I will force myself to read it. Thank you so much for such a splendid review!

Beautiful cover and an excellent review. I'm not the right demographic for this book, but it seems as if it is a perfect fit for youngsters dealing with some of the most complex issues of our time. Congratulations to Ms. Keen on her accomplishment and for earning BOTD honors. I wish her good fortune in finding an appreciative reading audience.

I find a story that shows the growth and development of characters fascinating, as seems to be the case with Star and Thatcher. Being orphaned and then having to adapt to living in another environment must be very hard. In addition, the siblings have to face issues such as racism, friendship, love, family problems, and finding themselves. Sounds like a great option.
