Review of Never Give Up
Never Give Up by Yvonne Lewis is a book based on a true-life story, which captures the life of an African-American in the American setting. It opens the eyes of Blacks to the injustices meted out to them for being people of color.
Michelle, an African-American woman, moves back to Saginaw, where she was raised, to start a fresh life and raise her kids. She was not ecstatic about returning home and perceived this as a temporary relocation. Then her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Nina, was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes.
Michelle struggled hard to be a perfect mother and see that her diabetic daughter leads a healthy, everyday life, irrespective of her disease. For how long is she willing to struggle with the "White Bloods" coming very hard at her? Can she survive the hard push of discrimination and racism thrown at her and her daughter? Would she fight back or eventually give in and allow herself to be consumed by the bigoted racists?
This book has so many positive aspects. It served as an eye-opener for me; I loved that. It showed me a clearer picture of what Blacks living in a different land went through. I love the fighting spirit of a black woman exuded in this book; I love how Michelle did a lot of things to see her daughter have a normal, healthy, and unbothered life. She was willing to fight to make sure neither she nor her daughter were discriminated against. She spoke and fought for the weak and the voiceless; I loved that. Her strong will knows no bounds. This book talks about a real African woman! I learned many things about diabetic patients from reading this book; I learned how and what their life looks and feels like and how this illness can be managed. Most importantly, I love how detailed this story is.
The one thing I did not like about this book is the way it ended. It ended too abruptly. I felt the author could have added a little bit of clarity at the end; I do not want to let out so much, so I would leave it at this. I recommend this book to mothers, the black race, and most especially, to African freedom fighters fighting particularly against racism.
*(admin note- the book ended abruptly because there is a sequel coming, and this book contains a cliffhanger ending)*
This book is very well written and it was professionally edited. I did not spot a lot of grammatical or typographical errors while reading this book. The storyline was a great one as well. Therefore, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
