Review of Man Mission
Man Mission: Four Men, Fifteen Years, One Epic Journey by Eytan Uliel is a story of four Australian men who attended the same college and had different goals, characters, and ambitions but were united by a common adventurous spirit. Their life after college was filled with work, family and they barely had time for fun activities. The narrator finds men just like him looking to escape from their monotonous lives and have adventurous escapades every year of their lives. The narrator is a former lawyer turned banker who struggles to keep up with his excessive workload. He decides the best way to escape and find his true purpose is to explore different parts of the world at least every year. He convinced his best friends to join in the adventure.
The narrator, Daniel, Sam, and Alec leave all behind and proceed to have the best time of their lives. Their experience and journeys in different parts of the world were both educative engaging and daring. Doing things that the average man would think twice before doing. Their love for taking risks is commendable. Although the narrator acts softly a couple of times, which earns him the pink bracelet most of the time, he can get out of his comfort zone and try crazy new things. The group was bounded by funny rules which the men made up. Every man in the group had his responsibilities in the group. Sam and the narrator were the founding members and leaders of the group. The idea originated from the unnamed narrator and he took pride in being the leader of the group. Daniel was noted for his organizational skills and was in charge of planning their travels. The narrator's expertise in reading maps made him the captain. Sam took care of the food and technical issues and Alec, with his carefree spirit, helped with almost everything. It was four men on a journey of self-discovery having annual escapades for over 15 years. They walked in the forests of New Zealand, cycled through Japan, kayaked in the Murray River, and more. Their encounters with people of different cultures give us a sneak peek into the lives of other people around the world. Their reference to the relationship Playbook is very entertaining. The narrator and his friends have a good sense of humor and the way they compare notes about their wives is amusing.
The Author, who is an avid traveler and travel writer, describes the actions with so much authority. Typical of a man who has been there and experienced it all.The four men are on a journey of self-discovery and finding their purpose. Some of their actions were crazy and unreasonable but they seem to have had a lot of fun doing it. It was not a perfect journey. There were accidents, foolish mistakes, and disappointments but these men did not give up and they decided to make it the best part of their lives. They would have wonderful stories to tell to their children and loved ones. I am happy that Alec found love too. The book ended on a good note and I could not stop wondering if the men would go for more adventures in the next few years. After all, they had it in them so it would be no surprise.
I rate Man Mission: Four Men, Fifteen Years, One Epic Journey 4 out of 4 stars. It is a work of engaging travel fiction. Filled with action and adventure, the perfect book for people who love to read about adventure, travel, and friendship. I love the book and was completely glued to it till the end.
The narrative is descriptive, detailed, filled with laughter, and easy to read. I recommend this book to the adventurous spirit, lovers of travel fiction, and anyone looking for a quick and interesting read.
