I Love My Gals by Margaret Ndawonde is a fictional novel about a woman named Nomsebenzi. She is a single parent and has two beautiful young girls. We are introduced to Nomsebenzi at a time in her life when her unemployment spell had just been broken. She had finally secured employment as a cleaner after losing her job two years back. Previously, Nomsebenzi worked as a top executive in the communications and marketing department. Being laid off from her executive job came as a shock, and for almost two years, she struggled to secure employment in the communications and marketing fields. Her savings were running dry, and her bills were piling up. Her biggest concern with the dwindling savings was the looming threat of losing her home.

The book is sweet and short, with only 26 pages. It whets the reader’s appetite, hooks them, and wraps them into Nomsebenzi’s story. The author’s narrative style is straightforward. The clear descriptions of places and people allow the reader to create vivid imagery as they read through the book.

I had a great time reading the book because it discusses Nomsebenzi’s family dynamics, the obstacles she experienced, and her employment challenges. The book was an entertaining and informative read. I liked how she fought to stay afloat, fought to keep her kids in excellent schools, and how much she invested in her kid’s well-being.

The vernacular language that was thrown in here and there added to my enjoyment. The toll of unemployment on the protagonists’ mental health was highlighted briefly and profoundly. Mental health remains one of the most crucial topics due to how it manifests from individual to individual. There is comfort in knowing that you are not alone, and it is commendable when novels also guide readers on where to find help.

The book appears to have been professionally edited, as I only found a few errors. There were many positive aspects, and I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline. I liked Nomsebenzi’s character and enjoyed reading about her motherhood journey. The story was empowering and inspirational. For these reasons, I am rating it 4 out of 4 stars. There was nothing I disliked about the book.

I recommend this book to readers who enjoy inspirational novels with strong female protagonists. If tales about ambitious women who strive to change their situations for the better appeal to you, then this book is ideal for you.

This definitely sounds like a book I would read, the storyline seems compelling and I lIke that it's o short! However it appears under the romance tab, is there any romance in it?

You had me at, "...mental health was highlighted briefly and profoundly." Mental health is an important issue and seeing an author weave it into their story is a lovely thing! Beautiful review.

The book seems like it would be a very good book to read. I like reading books about how people overcome and achieve their goals.
