Mistrust was highly prevalent during the pandemic times and people were always on the look out to demonize other people's mistake. Whether it was moral policing or the sane lecturing on being vigilant with masks and hygiene habits, the behaviour and theme prevalent during COVID times was eerily similar to the behaviour that was being potrayed in this book.

I noticed some similarities as well, although I wonder if any book with a similar feeling of isolation and mistrust and tension wouldn't call the pandemic to public memory.

In this book there are aspects of separation, isolation, and safety which are definitely similar with the pandemic period.

Definitely. Most post apocalyptic books draws similarities to the past 2020 pandemic. Because in truth, the pandemic is but the taste of what life would be like in a post apocalypse scenario. Imagine for instance that no vaccines were issued out, or that the cases kept mutating and spreading faster, or that perhaps it became as infectious in the summer months as it was in winter. It would definitely be an apocalypse scale event

The book gave this distinct isolated feeling that was quite similar to that of the pandemic. And the end of the world this-could-my-last-day-on-earth feeling. It had an overall feeling of doom cloaking the pages of the book.

The way that people stayed in their trusted groups and looked after each other definitely reminded me of lockdown during the beginning of the pandemic. It especially reminded me of my own family and friend group. We, like the groups in the book, stayed around our trusted group and rarely hung out with other people in fear of getting COVID-19 because of our lack of trust in others giving it to us.

Some of the similarities that I noticed include:
The desire to be close to our loved ones in both cases.
The need for safety.
There is the issue of mistrust in the book just as it was there during the Covid pandemic where people would give death glares whenever you sneezed in public, cough, or even wear your master the wrong way.

Yes, I agree with you. There are a lot of pandemic similarities. I think those are the common behavior of the humans once it comes to pandemics

I related a lot to the book. It was very similar to the pandemic and everyone was very judgemental. Segregation was also prominent throughout the book. Everyone had formed their own groups and accepted no one outside of them.

The isolation was definitely similar to that felt during the pandemic! During the height of the pandemic, people only wanted to be associated with those within their household because the less the contact with others the better which also correlates to the groups and separation seen within the book.

When I read the book, I did not feel that it had any similarities to the pandemic or the events thereof. But since you put it that way, I think I see where you are coming from.

No one could be trusted during the pandemic including the closest of friends. This is also well displayed in the book everyone cares for their own lives at a time of adversity.

I totally agree with you, I too noticed this sense of mistrust and judgement through the book and it made me think about how similar these feelings are to the ones we experienced (and are still experiencing) during the Pandemic. It's quite sad that in such a difficult situation, we feel judged and alone, it's important to remember to be kind to each other!!

Chinyere Nwankwo wrote: 02 Jun 2022, 10:00 Yes! I could totally relate this story to the pandemic and lockdown. We see everyone in the story forming and moving in their groups. We also notice the isolation, where people only want to be associated with their close relations. This is definitely what happened too with many of us during the pandemic.
I totally agree with you that the book has some striking similarities to the pandemic events. for example, as you've said, the isolation and lockdown.
