Review of A Bloody Book
[Following is a volunteer review of "A Bloody Book" by Chris Bowen.]
A Bloody Book by Chris Bowen is a story about Maxx, a thirteen-year-old kid going through a tough life. We learn from Maxx about his reading class. His teachers and the impact they have on his life. Maxx comes from a broken home and has everything working against him. He is just trying to get by in life and see another day. Mr. Foxx is a new teacher assigned to Maxx's class, and he is a person that wants to make a difference in these children's lives. Mr. Foxx sees potential in Maxx and wants to bring out the best in him. Maxx's family life is tragic. His parents are the worst people, and his little sister Rosie is traumatized by their lifestyle. This book will follow Maxx's journey and the events that making who he is, a troubled child.
The storyline was intriguing and unique. I was rooting for the character from start to finish. Maxx's character had a creative imagination, and his views on life and people were twisted and funny. The comedy in this book shone through despite its dark theme. The author managed to create a main character that was fascinating and unpredictable. The side characters were equally intriguing and memorable. Finally, the ending of this book makes you realize this is not a fairy tale. This is written with real-life situations and could be happening to a child in the world right now. The deep psychoanalysis the ending gives left me thinking about the consequences adults' actions have upon innocent children's lives.
I loved how the author showcased the thoughts of a thirteen-year-old boy going through dangerous and life-altering times. There was more of Maxx's inner monologue and less of the story. I think this was the author's aim, to show the changes made to his mental state throughout the book. Evident from Maxx's thoughts in the last chapter. Maxx has disturbing, and dark thoughts. Given his upbringing, it is likely how he processes everything from a violent and distrustful place. I felt sorry for the character.
This book was a page-turner and was interesting to read. The writing was impeccable. Well written and edited. I did not find any spelling or grammar errors in this book. The story is chronologically written and is easy to follow. The author managed to draw attention to every word written. I did not want to miss a thing from start to finish. For these reasons, I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars rating.
Due to the dark nature of this novel, I would recommend this book to people above the age of eighteen. A Bloody Book is a dark childhood story. It contains violence and drug abuse. Some scenes in this book might be a trigger to sensitive readers. The author managed to depicting a troubled child's thought process. I would recommend this book to persons interested in child psychology who want to read a writer's perspective on the topic. This is a must-read for people that enjoy reading dark-themed novels with a dose of humor. Get yourself a copy and enjoy the ride.
