Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
The first book in a series of nine we are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is an exciting and thrilling entrance into an entirely new world where magic and struggle combine in a complex kingdom.
Well written by author Matthew Tysz, this book kept me enthralled from start to finish with glimpses from kingdom to kingdom across time and perspective keeping a curious reader guessing from the outset.
The book is written from the perspectives of different characters across differing geographies giving the reader glimpses into the book's reality from differing angles and contexts. It begins by setting out the context of the kingdom and introducing the character settings in a way that keeps the reader guessing as to their motives and importance to the book's story right through.
We follow the story of Galen, an unassuming character born in the land of the princes where a civil war has raged for decades and struggle is rife. Galen leaves his homeland while pursued on a ship to claim his inheritance from a Blacksmith uncle he never met in the Kingdom of Voulhire. We, the reader, get to view the land of Voulhire through the eyes of young Galen, a stranger to this land describing the customs and way of life unfamiliar to the young traveler.
All the while, magic lies in the land and a former Lord of Hillport and magician Melorath has been replaced by King Wilhelm. The new Lord Eldus and his family must attempt to bring prosperity to the undeveloped yet promising town while trying to heal the wounds left by the former Lords who have left scars upon its people and who's influence still holds within its citizens. A fleet of ships stands guard over the town with many guardsmen in place and the story unfolds from the perspectives of these characters attempting to find their way in the land and make their mark in the world.
This book is enthralling from the very first page and is well written and well thought out. The reader can imagine the world created by the author and the descriptives are well played out through the eyes of the various characters. I enjoyed the development of the characters and Galen as the main character is likable, I particularly liked learning about this new land through his novice eyes and this allowed the reader to imagine and learn as he did throughout the story. Matthew Tysz has put a lot of thought into the creation of this world and it allows the reader to understand the geography, the politics and the context of the story well. The story was well planned and a great introduction into the Kingdom of Voulhire, transporting the reader into this literary world with ease.
The only negative aspect of this book that I would note is the movement from perspectives very regularly and the story seems to 'jump around' quite a bit. This can be slightly confusing to the reader at the beginning trying to work out where and when we are placed within the story however as you move through the book this becomes more easily transitioned to and easier understood. The book can be slow at times however I found, as the reader, to be significantly invested in the story enough to be eager to keep going. I have not deducted any points for this but is just to note that in order to understand the context it was essential for the author to take the time to explain which can appear slow at times.
There was no explicit content however words that may be viewed as sexual at times throughout, the first instance on page 33 Line 15. There are battle descriptions and descriptions of poverty however nothing that is extreme or gruesome in nature.
This is a well-written and well-edited book with no errors at any point. I give this book 4 out of 4 stars and cannot wait to read further into the story. I would recommend this book and particularly to anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre or sci-fi and would state that it is more suitable for a mature audience given the sexual references contained. This is a book that sets the scene perfectly, successfully introduces and develops a literary world and its inhabitants, and contains many plot changes. A captivating story overall.
