Review of The Altar of My Fate
Rosteval, son of Bosvadal of the line of Verestam, rightful prince of the Barduvatra has been displaced by his grandfather King Hamarvan in favor of his grandfather’s flunky Varyem. Rosteval is determined to regain his right of birth and take his rightful place as Prince of the Barduvatra. He decides he will take his followers and conquer new lands to win glory for himself and his people, but trouble follows on his heels in the form of Varyem and his grandfather King Hamarvan. Will Rosteval overcome it all and win glory and riches for himself and his followers? Or will King Hamarvan and his followers win the day?
The Altar of My Fate by Michael R. Schultheiss is a fantastical tale of sword-clashing bravery, and I found myself racing to the finish to find out what would happen with Rosteval and his collection of followers. Once I reached the end, I did not find myself disappointed.
There were many aspects of this story that were enjoyable, such as how believable the characters were, along with how the story hooked me and dragged me along for the ride. I found myself invested in Rosteval’s quest and rooting for the success of each trial he came to face. Above all else, I wanted him to obtain his goal. I also found just three errors, so I believe this book to be well edited.
The only real issues I found with this book were just a couple. One issue was the large cast of characters present in this book and that each character has a unique and interestingly spelled name. This made keeping up with the cast of characters a little tricky as the book went on. The second issue I had was how Rosteval had to introduce himself with his family line each time he crossed paths with a new character and how the new character had to introduce themselves with their own family lineage as well.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The issues I had were a matter of opinion, and others might not see them as a detriment to the story. There was nothing else to detract from my reading experience, so I offer this book top marks. I am also looking forward to reading the sequel as well.
I would recommend this book for an audience of mature readers, adults and older teenagers, who enjoy sword-wielding fantasy laced with a unique spin on magical use. I don’t recommend this book for younger readers because there are numerous instances of half-nude slave girls discussed frequently and bedroom activities taking place, along with graphic descriptions of bloody battles filling many pages of this story.
