“Can you say you have a love life if you don’t have one?” In Satayra Kent's Bespelled, Deena wants an answer to this question. Deena is a witch looking for her soulmate. Her efforts with a dating website have led her to being stood up three times in the past three weeks. She tells her woes to Aunt Ro after the third failed date, and then goes to her apartment with a bottle of wine. While drunk, Deena casts a spell to find love. She substitutes ingredients and has problems reading the directions for the spell. A hopeful Deena falls asleep and has an erotic dream involving her crush, Taber. When Deena wakes up, she feels boundless energy and is ecstatic about how good she feels. At work, she notices everyone in the office gravitate toward her. She also feels arousal building and feels the need to fulfill her desire. What spell did Deena unleash while drunk?

Kent made Deena’s behavior relatable to normal people. I can easily imagine how I would feel if someone stood me up. Deena’s crush, Taber, seems unattainable to her. I thought it was interesting how her Aunt Ro keeps Taber’s secret when Deena feels so rejected. Her Aunt Ro is a powerful witch, and I understood Deena’s shame with her actions to not seek help from her. The descriptions of Deena’s surroundings are vivid, allowing me to picture what was going on around her. I found a many humorous moments. One example was Deena’s experience in a grocery store. Her presence had people making out and taking off their clothes with strangers. Could you imagine being in the bread aisle and seeing two elderly people acting that way?

Bespelled is a fast read because it filled every moment with action and engaging dialogue. I liked how the emotional aspects took over the physical actions of the sex acts. However, everything Deena encounters is in detail. It wasn’t revealed until close to the end what Deena’s spell did. The unpredictable nature of how the story unfolds keeps the necessity to keep reading unquestionable. I couldn’t put the book down because my imagination ran wild on the different outcomes Kent had made possible.

3 out of 4 stars is what I can give this romantic comedy. I encountered over ten errors. I had to read some sentences several times to figure out what was being said. There were missing words and mismatching pronouns appear frequently. It would be beneficial to do another round of editing. Beyond editing, this book is perfect for a light read.

It is obvious this book is for adult readers. Bespelled is a brilliant choice if you like romantic comedies with well-developed characters. I have to caution readers as there are several explicit sex scenes and magic spell chants depicted in the book. This is an erotic fiction story that will make readers laugh out loud.

I have a soft spot for rom-coms, and this one seems brilliant. It's a pity that the edition needs work. I hope the author considers your review because the premise is original and I laughed out loud literally when reading your description of the supermarket scene. I feel this book would also make a great movie. And I always root for erotic scenes that don't focus just on the physical aspect.
Fantastic review!

Something I find odd is the copy I got from the author shows her last name spelled on the cover and title page as Satarya. However, the cover that OBC has shows it spelled as Satrya. I googled the book and both name, and got both spellings. I didn't lose points for it because I showed them the issue on the PRQ under my error list, but I wonder which one is correct?

I think Satyra is correct. Great review Stephanie_Chapman!😄 Deena must have been really drunk to not realise what spell she put on herself and it made for a funny story.

I haven't read a book on spell or witches. I might start with this book, the plot is all I look forward to reading in a book and the characters are interesting. However, I hope the author corrects the errors you stated. I enjoyed reading your review, welldone!!!

I like books on paranormal activities, from your review, this looks like one I would like to read. I'm however discouraged by the amount of errors in the work. I wonder what spell Deena cast? Interesting review.

I can relate to what Deena experienced. Lack of love when she is beautiful. The story is very relatable. But the intensity of the spell she cast was enormous for it to affect people everywhere she went.
You are yet to be the best version of yourself. Keep refining.

Even though I don't normally like stories with witches and spells, the bread aisle scene sounds pretty amazing.

Oh, this sounds really good! I love books that have the potential to make you laugh out loud. Hopefully, they do another round of editing because this sounds like it has a wonderful storyline. I could also see a TV series adaptation; I think it could be a fun and playful show.

Romantic comedies are my favorite. Based on your well-written review, this sounds like quite an entertaining book to read. I look forward to finding out more about this mysterious spell that Denna casts and seeing how it changes the behavior of the people around her. Great job!

This sounds like a great book! I think we've all gotten to the point where we wished we could cast a spell to attract romantic love. Although, it doesn't sound like this is too good for Deena. I'd love to read and find out what Taber's secret is! Thanks for the great review.
