A Dead-End Job by Justin Alcala is a funny and wonderfully written book. Buckanan Palasinski is a lonely old hit man living pay check to pay check (if he gets them) and has nothing to live for, but the regular Dungeons and Dragons game at Gamer’s Pair-a-Dice that took him out of his sad life and into a world of endless possibilities. Bucks life has not been the best, surviving the army was a plus (thought PTSD is a friend of no one). Humans need money to survive in this world and the job you do to get that money is not always your dream job. Some people love what they do and others just take the cards as it is dealt, but what if that is not the only deck?

This book has three hundred and thirty pages. It is divided into twenty-six chapters. In the beginning the author includes a prologue and at the end an epilogue. The dedications were one of my favorite parts of the book and made me even more excited to begin reading. The story is narrated from the first-person point of view and is in the present tense. Some themes found in this book include character development, chaos vs. order, love and sacrifice, courage and heroism, overcoming, fulfillment, and death.

Justin Alcala is a wonderful writer and did an amazing job at writing this book. The storyline is original and is very captivating. There is a good balance of tension and release in the book. Justin Alcala uses humor to make serious situations less stressful. One of the best parts of the book is the characters which are based on real supernatural creatures and John Dillinger who was a real life American gangster that lived during the Great Depression.

I do not have a negative comment about this book. The ending left me satisfied and the book had a good story development. Bucks character development is very well received and made the story more ‘realistic’ if you will.

There were no errors that I saw, making A Dead-End Job a good read. There were no errors and the storyline was very thought out, that is why I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend A Dead-End Job to anyone interested in books concerning sci-fi, humor, fantasy, mystery, and drama. The epilogue gave the book a mysterious ending that leaves you wondering yet not leaving you on a cliff-hanger. The epilogues energy is also a wonderful representation of the books energy which gives the reader a well-rounded end.
