Whatever Comes: A dark comedy about a sentimental fool’s journey to find love and success by Mark H. Masse, is a fictional story about the life of a young man named Max Galway. Max is from Euclid, Ohio and he takes you through his life beginning with senior year in high school to his post-college years. Throughout this time period of (1972-1982) in the novel, Max experiences love, success, loss, family issues all the while trying to become a successful writer.

My first initial response prior to reading the novel was that it proved to have a good title “Whatever Comes.” I figured that this novel would be about overcoming obstacles in life and I was right. I was somewhat skeptical about the book because it was written from a male point of view Max Galway, and I figured that it would involve talking about conquests of him with different women and partying amongst other things. Moreover, Max Galway described his life, but it was in no way what I expected. This book was very good and I really enjoyed the adventures of Max Galway. I found myself anxious to see what happened next and it was hard for me to put the book down. “Whatever Comes” is one of the first books that I have read in years that had the jaw-dropper effect on me because some of the things that happened to Max Galway caught me completely by surprise.

In the book, “Whatever Comes” Max Galway was a good guy that just experiences some unexpected events and managed to deal with them the best way that he could. During his adventures, Max experienced several relationships along with the mere infatuation of some women in the novel. First there was his infatuation with Linda DelVecchio from middle school, then Debbi O’ Conner whom he dated in high school. Further into the story he meets Eileen Lynch and Emilie Driessen. The story behind these women is very intriguing to say the least, but you will just have to read the book to find out!

Despite personal relationships, Max Galway befriended several people in the story who seemed to help him along during his bad misfortunes. Peter Gustafson, a college friend, Eric Gregory, whom Max meets in California and a guy by the name of Tom Flynn who becomes Max’s writing muse. At times in the story, Max is going through some major issues in life and had even stopped writing, but it was with the encouragement of his family and friends that helped him to continue writing.

I found the book “Whatever Comes” by Mark H. Masse to be very interesting because it was nice to read about how things progressed in the 1970’s and 1980’s during the life of Max Galway. I was born in 1980, so it was nice to gain insight on how life in the 1970’s was portrayed. I noticed that relationships were viewed differently then and the importance of education was very strong. I think that we currently share comparable issues to relationship troubles, family issues and that common search for independence and figuring out what you plan to do for the rest of your life.

Overall, the book “Whatever Comes” by Mark H. Masse was great fictional story looking in on the life of Max Galway. I would give the book a rating of 4 because I believe that everyone can relate to this novel in some way, whether or not it involves relationships, family issues or just figuring out life in general. By the end of the novel, Max Galway finally has things figured out; despite the rocky road he had to travel towards his destination.
