The Dolphin Among Orcas by Tom Meinerz may be a child’s book, but it was valuable to me. In the ocean, a dolphin named Swirl gives birth to twins: Antonia and Miletta. It is unusual for a dolphin to give birth to twins, so Swirl’s calves created attention.

However, a pack of deadly sharks lives among Swirl and her pod. Sly is the pack’s leader, one brutal shark that ends a prey with a sole bite. Unfortunately, Swirl’s life is short-lived after being bitten by Sly. Miletta gives birth to an unusual calf, Courage. Due to his deformity, he received mean comments from other dolphins, especially Cracker. In one case, Courage is left far behind by his pod. He encounters a pod of orcas. As vicious and aggressive as orcas may be, deformed Courage won their hearts. What did Courage do?

There is a lot to say about this volume. First, I enjoyed the lessons incorporated. Courage was seemingly the odd dolphin that had nothing to showcase. In a twist of events, he proved himself more valuable than most of his enormous and normal-looking pod members.

Again, I enjoyed Antonia’s maternal instincts. Antonia was brave and a skilled fighter. Moreover, she knew her nephew, Courage, was a target for the bully dolphins. She made sure to protect Courage at all times. At one time, Antonia and her daughter were left behind to protect Miletta and Courage.

I loved the diverse types of sharks I learned about: bull shark, tiger shark, nurse shark, the great white shark, etc. Some, like the nurse shark, came as an added knowledge to me. In addition, the author included some facts about marine animals. Did you know dolphins do not drink water? Instead, they get hydrated from the meals they devour. There are more interesting facts!

I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars because it won my heart with lessons and remarkable facts. Furthermore, I found no element to dislike. I only encountered a few grammatical errors, so the work is well edited. I recommend it to anyone interested in a tale about an extraordinary dolphin that beat all odds to earn respect from its pod members.

I am going to add this to my bookshelf. Children's books are one of my favorite genres. Stories that teach a lesson and bring me knowledge are among my favorites. Now, I am curious about Courages' deformities. Great review that brought insight into the book with an honest voice.

I liked that this books has important morals for kids to learn, in addition to other educational aspects about marine animals. I didn't like that it contains grammatical errors even if they are few as it's intended for children. Great review.

This book will teach a lot of lessons to children. It’s also good for them to learn about fishes.
