Review of The Dream Primer
Have you ever had a dream or an idea that you’d love to pursue, but you fear failure or that it isn’t worth the time and effort? Maybe it seems worthy to you, but is it worth it to others? Would anyone else obtain value in this pursuit? So many individuals embody aspirations, but fear and insecurities hold them back. Jeff Meyer counters this thinking. He believes “the world needs what you have to offer” (Meyer 92). Meyer’s The Dream Primer is an inspiring book encouraging readers to pursue their dreams and goals.
Jeff Meyer is an author, coach, and pastor who works with individuals, motivating them to go after those deep desires and ideas. Meyer begins his book with a description of a dream. Sometimes those dreams sneak up on people. At times, they feel like a need or a demand. Other times, the soul simply needs more. When individuals experience these feelings, they may force them down, thinking they are greedy or foolish. Yet, Meyer encourages readers that these feelings are unselfish. These dreams are needed and beneficial for communities. He explains these aspirations can benefit others if we take the time to let those dreams come to fruition. Unforeseen intentions leave us stagnant.
I enjoyed everything about Meyer’s book. It was concise and inspired me to think about the importance of aspirations. Many people deem dreams as unforeseen goals, but Meyer encourages readers that these ideas are not solely for the dreamer; they benefit the community also. Although not mentioned, Meyer reminded me of Langston Hughes’ poem “A Dream Deferred.” When a dream is deferred, does it dry up, rot, fester?– or worse, explode? Meyer's goal is to inspire readers to pursue that dream and make a difference in the world.
One item I took away from The Dream Primer was the why questions. Fear clouds an individual's judgement and keeps him from pursuing his dream. Meyer motivates readers to ask the why question five times. Each time the question is acknowledged, it gains clarity of the goal.
I also appreciated his idea of thinking about five years in the future: What will your future look like in five years if you choose to move forward with your dream? What would it look like if you didn't? It challenged me to think about my own objectives.
There’s nothing I disliked about this book. It was professionally edited, and no errors were discovered. It was inspiring and easy to follow. Jeff Meyer exceptionally produced a guide to inspire Americans to dream and make a difference in the world. For these reasons, I’m excited to award this book a 4 out of 4 stars.
I recommend this book to those asking the "what now?" question. Entrepreneurs and leaders would benefit from this book for many reasons. High school and college students would find this inspiring as they step toward their future. I believe many individuals would benefit in practical ways from Jeff Meyer’s The Dream Primer.
