Judith E. Bowen's The Space Between is a lyrical memoir. It is a book about relationships, bonds, family, history, memories, regret, love, depression, and finding happiness or joy in the little things around you.

The author finds a journal of her mother after she passes. This journal contains her mother’s story and how her mother saw her. With it, she can understand her mother more. She matches the pieces of information written in the journal and tries to relate them to her experiences from when she was born until her adulthood.

The positive aspects of this book are many. The book was beautifully written and had an amazing storyline and plot. I loved how the author documented her life experiences, the mistakes she made, her joyful moments and moments of sadness, etc. She also shared how fleeting time could be and was able to communicate and also be understood. I loved how detailed she was in describing the places she traveled, like Berlin, Germany, etc. It felt like I was on a journey with her. I liked that I was able to read and learn about the lives of women in the past. Nothing much was expected from women except to bear children and take care of their homes and husbands, which changed as time passed. I loved that she was able to share difficult moments in her life, for example, the depression she suffered from due to academic failure. It was something I could relate to, and it made me feel like I wasn’t alone. I understood that there were people out there from who a lot is expected, but they aren’t able to meet those expectations. The author's story is also encouraging and can serve as motivation to anyone because Judy went after her dreams no matter the difficulties and did not let her failures define her. I would say this book has a soul, and it was fun reading it.

The negative aspect was that the book was a bit confusing at the beginning, not knowing who and who the author was talking about, but my confusion got cleared as I read further.

I will be rating this book 4 out of 4 stars because it was exceptionally written and professionally edited. They were no profanity or vulgar words. Just a minor typo, and no error was made.

I recommend it to persons who read lyrical memoirs and who love a book with history and soul. I also recommend this book to young adults and adults

I like that the book deals with themes like relationships, love and depression. These are topics I am always ready to look into.

I feel like a journal written by my mother is something I would like to find when she passes on at her old age. It would be nice to learn from some of her mistakes and perhaps learn things about her I never knew before.
