Review of The Drifter of Katy
Stanley was an ex-soldier. After leaving the army, he started associating with the wrong kind of people. This landed him in prison for six years. The Drifter of Katy by Ludlow Whittingham begins with Stanley being excited to have served his sentence and would be let out the next day. When his day of release finally came, Stanley was given his belongings, including a horse he had when he was imprisoned. Stanley started toward his home in Katy. This was his second chance to make his parents proud by helping out on their farm. Needing a good night's rest, Stanley decided to stop at the first town he came upon: El Paso. There he met a man who claimed to be his father's friend, and he decided to spend the night with him. The man had a lovely daughter who convinced Stanley to spend an extra night. Will Stanley’s parents forgive him? Will he fall in love?
This book was in some ways a love story. Stanley met Racquel and instantly liked her. The overall concept of the book was an interesting one. I was intrigued to find out if Stanley’s parents would forgive him and how they would react after not seeing him for six long years. The book had a suspenseful nature.
On the downside, I found more negative aspects than positive ones in this book. Firstly, it contained a lot of unnecessary details that added nothing to the story. Every minute detail was mentioned. For example, a character was taking a bath. Instead of just saying he was taking a bath, the author gave details of how a bath was taken. This just made the book seem longer than it actually was. Secondly, the conversations were poorly written. Conversations the protagonist had internally were not differentiated. I would recommend these conversations be in italics so the writing can flow smoothly. Also, because of the lack of or misplaced quotation marks, some conversations did not make sense and were hard to understand.
This book was not professionally edited. There were at least four errors on every page which distracted me from the story. Because of the reasons mentioned above and the poor editing, I have to give this book a rating of two out of four stars. I did not give it a lower rating because the storyline was an interesting one.
After much work is done on this book, I would recommend it to people who like reading about life after serving a sentence and how one goes about getting their life back on track. I would also recommend it to people who enjoy romance stories.
