This is a great review and adds to the urge to indulge in this novel. WW11 and the German invasion has always made for a good read. Most of the books about World War II that I encounter take place in Germany, so it’s good to see the Italian side of the war. I’m not too big on romance novels, but the historical aspect seems to add something special to it. The author’s willingness to not have everything necessarily be happily ever after increases the intrigue as well. Thank you for the helpful review.

"Shadow Song" by Anita Morrish is a fictional novel based on events in and around Rome from July 1943 to June 1944. The Italian government has requested an armistice and the Nazis attacked Rome. While the Nazis are occupying Rome opposition forces exist around Rome and several Roman soldiers have joined these forces. Francesca lives in Rome with her family and her brother has joined the opposition forces. She hopes to see Roberto again but it will require a defeat of the Nazi army. Francesca falls in love with a tenor singer named Giorgio. One needs to read the book to learn if she can help her brother return home and what is her role in the opposition? Then Carlo, an army doctor, returned to Rome after getting shot in Sicily. What happens when Carlo rekindles an old love interest with Francesca under the eyes of the Nazis? Even though this is a fictional story it reads like a true story during the Nazi occupation of Italy. I am looking forward to reading this entire book because I love history and I especially love to see autocratic governments fall to democracy. I hope fellow members see a comparison to what we in the U.S. could experience in the near future if the wrong person gets elected in 2024. We all need to vote to same our Democracy in 2022 and 2024. Getting caught as an oppositionist led to dire consequences during WWII and this could happen again if the far-right started a civil war. Very good review.
