Definitely both! the experience of the book is unsurpassed, as you imagine each scene. But the re-enactment of the film with music and sounds exceeded expectations. If anyone is still unfamiliar with the series, I highly recommend it.

I actually saw the movies first before wanting to read the books. I started reading book one, but found it difficult to finish it. In this case I think I prefer the movies... but this might be because I didn’t read the books first.

Lord of the rings is one of my childhood Favourite movies together with Legend of the seeker and others. I loved the movie. I loved Gandalf. My most intriguing characters are the Elves, I loved there long ears the most

The Lord of the Rings movies are really good. That being said the books are way better. You will enjoy both if you happen to read or watch them as both are fantastic.

I don't think that The Lord of the Rings would have been what it is today without the movies. I usually love more books and think that when a movie is made, many important aspects of the story are lost. But, surprisingly this time I adored the movies.

Both are significant achievements for their respective mediums. They are both watersheds for fantasy, making them difficult to compare.

I'll choose the books over the movies. The hobbit films, however can't hold a candle to book.

I read the books when I was very young, so I don't have much recollection of them, but I remember loving the movies. Peter Jackson really brought the world to life for me, so his iteration is the one I will always remember the best.
