Man Mission by Eytan Uliel is a story about four friends spanning over fifteen years. Every year, the four friends go on a vacation where they engage in tests of manliness-kayaking, hiking and the likes. Each of the fifteen chapters talks about one of their vacations. Over the years, the friends experience various hardships such as the fear of getting old, various regrets and family issues.

There were various things I liked about this book. Firstly, the author’s descriptions were so vivid that despite having never been to any of the places the friends went to, I felt like I was there with them. Through their eyes, I saw the ice walls of Iceland; I saw the South African Safari and many other beautiful locations. I loved the dynamic between the four friends; it did not feel forced. They joked around and teased each other sometimes, but they were always there for each other. For example, when the narrator started having family issues, they stayed by him and comforted him. This book was not exactly short, but the cleverly inserted humour and the exceptional editing kept me turning the pages.

I liked this book a lot. However, I think the author should have described the narrator’s home life more. For example, the only thing I knew about his children was their genders; I did not even know their names. His marriage suffered a similar problem; I couldn’t understand the relationship between the narrator and his wife because it was hardly talked about. I know that the author wanted to focus on the vacations, but he could have easily removed two of the vacations; this would have allowed him to describe the narrator’s home life more without making the book overly long.

After some consideration, I have decided to rate this book four out of four stars because the descriptions were great; the relationship between the friends was beautiful, and I generally enjoyed the book. I did not remove a star because my many likes far outweigh my one dislike.

I recommend this book to people who love to travel but don’t have the time to do so. The vivid descriptions in this book will make you feel like you’re travelling with the protagonists. However, I think people who dislike books with too many swear words should stay away from this book because it contains a lot of swearing.
