Diana Gabaldon, anyone?

In light of Starz's newest series and one of my all-time favorite authors getting her richly deserved screen time, are there any other readers out there who adore Gabaldon's Outlanders series?

For those who haven't been introduced to her magical world, here's a quick break-down: Scottish accents; tall, muscular men in kilts; time travel; history; steamy romance (minus any "dripping desires"); red hair; and did I mention the kilts? Seriously, it's like Gerard Butler's voice (although he might be Irish...) on Prince Charming, and historically accurate story lines. What could be better? Both brain and heart get fed.

So, anyone? There's gotta be someone else out there in love with Jaime and Claire.

The Outlander and the first few books of the series were, I thought, fabulous! (I hadn't had a crush on a fictional character like I had for Jamie for a long time!) The series kind of dropped off for me by about book 4 or 5, and then I stopped reading. Should I pick them up again?

Also, I'm a little nervous about the series because I don't want the characters to be a disappointment--to not live up to my imagination. Anyone else nervous about that? I guess I shouldn't expect Jamie to be as great in person as he is in my mind!

I'm in the same boat as Jenn+books; I loved the story and devoured the first few in the series then found my interest waning and a wait between books led me to not pick it up after about book 4 or 5 (wonder why that part is hard to remember) ... wondering the same thing about whether to pick them up again or not

I picked up Outlander years ago when I lived alone in a crappy duplex with no money for cable. I hoped the size of the book would keep me occupied - and it did! For the next few months, I did nothing but read the books in this series until I ran out and had to wait for a new one. I can only hope that the Starz series does the books justice or they will have a large group of very dedicated fans coming after them.

I am also in the club with Jenn+books and Cali. I LOVED the first few books in The Outlander series. I have read the first three at least four times each. I actually think that book one in the series is my all time favorite book. I liked the fourth book alright, but after that I just lost interest. I did not get as hooked to Brianna and Roger as I did to Jaime and Claire. I have wondered if I need to pick the series back up and push through the fifth book to see if the later part of the series picks back up for me or not.

I loved the first one. But once I picked up the second and saw what was coming I just couldn't face reading it... It seemed too heartbreaking. I preferred to leave them in my mind as they were at the end of book 1

I'm a fan of the series. I'm planning a reread to prepare for the new book. I first discovered the series when I was in high school, so reading them again is liking reconnecting with old friends.

I probably won't watch the new series unless (or until) it gets released on Netflix streaming. I'm hoping it'll be a good adaptation. These things are always a bit hit or miss and I always try not to get my hopes up too much.

Never read the series...are they identifiable by order or do I have to know publication date?

I read the first book in the series based on the recommendation of a good friend who said something to the effect of, "Bessssst. Books. Ever. I. Love."

Unfortunately for me (as so many people seem to really love the series), it just wasn't my cup of tea. I do not care for romance books, and this was sort of a time-traveling romance with accents. I later got a recap from my friend about the rest of the series as I would not be continuing on, and oy vey! Things seem to just get soap opery weird, with a time traveling twist.

I LOVE the Outlander series, all of it, have not read the latest one yet, though. I've got all of them in hardback, paperback, and ebook format. My ALL time favorite series. I also love her Lord John Grey series of books, too.
I'm counting the days til the series on Starz! premeries.....

I agree. I actually read up until A Breath of Snow and Ashes and that was as far as DG had written at that point in time. I never picked them up after that. I believe she is working on book 8 or 9 now? But I will probably never go back to reading them. I thought they were good books, but I never understood the obsession with them.

And I may be in the minority and would probably be crucified by diehard Outlander fans, but I think that book one was the best book and she should have stopped there. *ducks to avoid flying objects being thrown at me*

I fell in love with the Outlander books back in 1996 when we were studying the Salem witch trial in history at college. I happened to open it at the page where she was discussing Geilis Duncan ... I thought she had an intriguing take on the subject so I read the first book ... then the next ... then it was too late to stop! The first 3 or 4 are teh best in my opinion but I did like them all ... i think the last was the worst one ...

I have a clear image of jamie and claire and they look nothing like they do in the television series (I know I cpipldn't have expected them to!) ... I have ot beeb able to see it anyway because it's not been shown in England ...
