As Hattie waits for her car, she analyzes the guests at the funeral she just attended and judges them according to how wet their handkerchiefs are… but whose funeral was it? She has no memory of the funeral, how she got there, or the place she is to be taken after it. All she remembers are the headaches. Hattie Vavaseur by M. Rebecca Wildsmith is an intriguing story about death and what happens after it. Where exactly is Hattie? What happened to her? Why doesn’t she remember anything besides the headaches and her childhood with her aunt and uncle?

The story begins with Hattie attending a funeral, her funeral, but she doesn’t know it. After it, she is taken to a mansion she doesn’t recognize and placed in a pink room... PINK, like she hasn’t spent her whole life avoiding that awful color. Things are strange in the mansion, especially because the master of the house, seems to hate Hattie. But when she is taken to an appointment with Vamelda, a clairvoyant, things began to make sense, and Hattie must accept her reality because that is the only thing she can do.

I love the interactions between Vamelda and Hattie, and how they both get to know and like each other when at first, it seemed impossible. I also like how Hattie has philosophical conversations and questions everything when talking with the Master of the house she’s staying at, as I believe most readers have asked themselves the same at least once.

I like how smooth and captivating the author’s writing is, I love how Wildsmith described the characters and the scenes, making the reader feel part of the story, like another character. The story is slow-paced, which, honestly, I do not mind, as I think it goes perfectly with the events and feelings the characters are having.

I do, however, must admit that I dislike the way Vamelda elongates words for dramatic effect, as I find it annoying in writing or speaking. But that is only a personal preference, and it does suit the character, being a clairvoyant. The only negative aspect of this book is that some things in the story are both predictable and disappointing, as there is no amazing plot twist.

Overall, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Hattie Vavaseur is an amazing novel that is professionally edited, as I did not find errors, is an easy read that can be done in one or two sittings. This book is a page-turner, I couldn’t put it down.
This book is perfect for readers who enjoy a cozy and easy read, persons who enjoy mysteries and love reading about the afterlife.

The interactions between Vamelda and Hattie always made me laugh up to a certain degree, no matter how serious the situation got!
