Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures
Mary Grace lives in Kansas with her parents and her little brother, Donny. She loves her whole family and has lots of friends. Mary Grace is really happy with her life, but then everything changes when she learns that her parents have to go to Africa for the next two years and that she and her brother will have to live in California with their grandparents. Mary Grace loves her grandparents, but the fact that her life is changing so suddenly and her parents will be away for two whole years breaks her heart. She tries her best to not show her sadness to her little brother, as he is really happy to see their grandparents and their dogs. Mary Grace is young, but she is a strong and really smart girl with the responsibility of always protecting her little brother. After starting school in California, Mary Grace feels left out, and she soon realises that there are some people who are not welcoming and want her to go away. Will Mary Grace be able to protect her brother? Will she be able to find new friends and enjoy her new life in California? To know more about Mary Grace and her brother, read Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe.
One of my favourite things about this book was Donny’s personality. He has Down syndrome, but he is always optimistic and enthusiastic about everything. He loves reading and learning new things and is never bothered by his condition. Donny has the ability to make everybody smile by using either his words or his hugs. I also love how Mary Grace loves her brother so much and is always so protective of him. She is a kid, but she is really smart and open-hearted. She always takes others' feelings into consideration before doing anything, and almost everyone adores her for her loving nature. This book also talks about bullying, which is a serious matter in schools, and it was handled really well in this story.
There was nothing about this book that disappointed me. Both Donny and Mary Grace are unique in their own way, and everybody can learn something from both of them. The story was well structured, and I was happy with the ending.
I can say that this book is professionally edited, as I was only able to find a few minor errors. I have no reason to deduct any stars, so I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
Reading this story was a pleasure. Children older than seven who enjoy mysteries should read this book, in my opinion. This book is also suitable for adults who want to learn more about children with special needs. Everyone can learn something from Donny’s optimism and Mary Grace’s loving nature.
