Review of The Spiritual Treasure Trove
The Spiritual Treasure Trove is a collection of about 204 Bible topics for the purpose of meditation and study. The topics capture the everyday life of a Christian including the questions they need answers to and the challenges they face. For each of the topics, the author gives a brief introductory paragraph, provides references from the bible, presents questions to further drive home the content of the topic and finally, a little exercise at the end. The introductory paragraph gives you a picture of what the topic is all about, the references are intended to provide detailed information, while the questions and exercises that follow are to test the readers’ understanding and ability to comprehend the topic.
Being his first book, it is apparent that Charles Ray Smith is a gifted writer. After spending four years in what he described as ‘the labour of love’ to compile the contents of this piece, it is safe to say that he delivered to the taste of his audience. He also went further to give the history of some of the words that formed the topics including their origin. This Christian book is really worth the read and could serve as a good way to understand the word of God in a simpler manner. The book teaches readers how to understand and translate the bible into easily comprehensible words.
I enjoyed this piece because it is comprehensive. Each chapter is concise and does not exceed two pages. It is difficult for one to search for topics that do not explain the central theme of each chapter of the bible without finding them. Indeed, the four years which was spent on this work was very thorough. I do not think there are many of such books that encapsulate the bible in such a comprehensive manner. The fact that Smith was able to briefly summarize the content to expect for each topic in a paragraph makes the book irresistible to read. I liked this very much.
Another thing that makes this book special to me is its simplicity. To some people, the Bible is cumbersome and can be hard to comprehend. Smith did a good job by breaking the bible into topics while providing references from the bible that bothers on each topic. His writing style, therefore, simplified the bible into fewer pages. He went an extra mile to make this piece beginner friendly. The questions attached to each topic could be used for Bible classes and discussions. The ‘Fill in the Blanks’ section could appear puerile to some readers, yet it is strategic. Being able to fill in the blank spaces with the appropriate word, tests your ability to understand and remember the content for each topic. This piece could easily be called a mini-bible.
However, I did not appreciate the fact that it was just the King James Version of the Bible that was used throughout the book. The King James Version of the bible does not contain all the books of the bible unlike the Good News Bible. Thus, I would have preferred if the author employed several versions of the Bible for a more comprehensive and encompassing piece. This is the only thing I would say I disliked.
This is the kind of book that helps you improve your daily Christian life without making you experience boredom at any point at all, hence I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was exceptionally well-edited and I would recommend this book to lovers of the word of God, those who are finding it hard to be consistent in their daily study of the word of God and to all Christians in general. This wonderful piece of art would surely be instrumental towards helping them achieve their goals.
